Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century. The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.

I have read some books this term. The one which impressed me most is . I brought this book last term. The book consists of three versions: French,Chinese and English. I read Chinese version first, which made my second read in English much easier. I’m not going to talk about the fairy tale’s writing skills, writing style and what philosophy it contains. Instead,I will pick out several sentences which moved me a lot and then show my feeling.
In part 4,there is “Not everyone has had a friend.” And later,in part 17,there’s “It’s also lonely with people.” The two sentences nearly have the same meaning. A true friend is of a lifetime. You may say that: “I have a lot of friends, and we always play together and chat together……” But in fact, friends are not those whom you always stay with. Friends can be away from your daily life, can be out of connection for a long time, but they understand what you do and what you say all the time. You never feel embarrassed when you stay with your friends and even say no words.
In part 8,the little prince: “He had taken seriously certain inconsequential remarks and had grown very unhappy.” It’s the same to us. We are too concerned about what others say to do what we really want to. Nowadays,we seems to care more about other people than ourselves. When you have bought a dress you thought was beautiful, someone says that: “ Oh,it is not suitable for you.” Guess what, you will not wear the dress any more even if it is new.
In part 18,the flower had seen a caravan passing: “The wind blows them away. They have no roots, which hampers them a good deal.” The sentence seems ridiculous, however, makes me think a lot. For human being, roots mean spirit belief. There’s someone saying that: “One nation won’t be destroyed as long as it has belief.” Here,I want to mention Jewry. No matter how much hardship it went through,it never give up its struggling. I have seen a photo: an old Jewish woman holds a book and reads it seriously even though she is in the ruin after one battle. I admire this nation, and at the same time,I worry about our nation. Maybe it has belief which I don’t notice. It couldn’t be denied that we are being more and more fickle and materialistic. We are losing our spiritual belief gradually. Read more and search for one spiritual holy land.
In part 21,the fox tells the little prince : “It’s the time you spent on your rose that makes you rose so important.” I love this sentence most. I think of people’s dream. Perhaps in others’ eyes, our dreams are insignificant. They always discourage us. But what we should know is that only if you devote to your dream, your dream id unique. You yourself is the master of your dream.
At last,I want to take the author’s word as the ending: All grown-ups were children first (But few of them remember it). If only we all remember it.

In the first summer vacation in the college, I changed 3 part-time jobs. The first one was waiter; the second one was teaching assistant in Talking Time Language Village (TTLV); the third one was interpreter in a Highway Service Station. Maybe you will ask me how can you get 3 part-time jobs and why do you want to change it? Actually this is a good question. Here are 3 reasons: first I want to speak English, second I want to practice English, third I want to use English. This was also the main reason I quitted the first one job waiter. Then I searched TTLV online and I attended the interview and passed the teaching test. Everything seems went smoothly, I started to work there in a few days later. I was a teaching assistant there, I was in charge of 8 students in my class and I assisted the foreign teacher to interpret for the students during the class. I work there for 20 days then I left because of Olympic Games in China. So I lost, that seems God always take good care of me, one of my supervisor in TTLV recommended a good job to me after I lost a few days, that was my third job in that vacation. I was an interpreter and I was in charge of communication with foreign friends there. I worked there for 30 days, I got 1500RMB which was my first time to earn so much money by myself in my lifetime.
In the following winter vacation I went back to TTLV. I was in the same position there, but different students and different teachers, so I made new friends, I got along with my foreign teachers and I improved my English a lot, especially, Brad who is an American, so well we got along with each other that he went back to my hometown with me to celebrate Spring Festival with my family, he spent 3 days with my family of course I was the only interpreter between my family and Brad.
In this summer vacation, Customized English Services which is a new comprehensive English service in Shijiazhuang was founded by Brad. I was lucky to be selected by him. Now I am working with him to assist him to do office work and establish business relationship with new clients.
Above all, I mentioned so much work experience of mine, almost are related to English, if I don’t know English, if I don’t speak, practice, and speak English I have nothing. Actually I am not the best one among you, some of you are better than me, but you need to stand out to show yourself. If you have no chance, make it; if you have a small chance, grab it and make it bigger and bigger.
English is an language it is a tool used by human, so let us be master of English let English be our servant. We need to take advantage of English, nor does let English take advantage of you. BeforeI end my speech I wish everybody be the master of English and your life, find a decent job with English in the future. Thank you

The writer of the novel is Jane Austen . Jane Austen was born at Steventon on December 16, 1775, the youngest of seven children. She received her education-scanty enough, by modern standards-at home. Besides the usual elementary subjects, she learned French and some Italian, sang a little, and became an expert needle-woman. Her reading extended little beyond the literature of the eighteenth century, and within that period she seems to have cared most for the novels of Richardson and Miss Burney, and the poems of Cowper and Crabbe. Dr. Johnson, too, she admired, and later was delighted with both the poetry and prose of Scott. The first twenty-five years of her life she spent at Steventon; in 1801 she moved with her family to Bath, then a great center of fashion; after the death of her father in 1805, she lived with her mother and sister, first at Southampton and then at Chawton; finally she took lodgings at Winchester to be near a doctor, and there she died on July 18, 1817, and was buried in the cathedral. Apart from a few visits to friends in London and elsewhere, and the vague report of a love affair with a gentleman who died suddenly, there is little else to chronicle in this quiet and uneventful life.
But quiet and uneventful though her life was, it yet supplied her with material for half a dozen novels as perfect of their kind as any in the language. While still a young girl she had experimented with various styles of writing, and when she completed “Pride and Prejudice” at the age of twenty-two, it was clear that she had found her appropriate form. This novel, which in many respects she never surpassed, was followed a year later by “Northanger Abbey,” a satire on the “Gothic” romances then in vogue; and in 1809 she finished “Sense and Sensibility,” begun a dozen years before. So far she had not succeeded in having any of her works printed; but in 1811 “Sense and Sensibility” appeared in London and won enough recognition to make easy the publication of the others. Success gave stimulus, and between 1811 and 1816, she completed “Mansfield Park,” “Emma,” and “Persuasion.” The last of these and “Northanger Abbey” were published posthumously.
The most remarkable characteristic of Jane Austen as a novelist is her recognition of the limits of her knowledge of life and her determination never to go beyond these limits in her books. She describes her own class, in the part of the country with which she was acquainted; and both the types of character and the events are such as she knew from first-hand observation and experience. But to the portrayal of these she brought an extraordinary power of delicate and subtle delineation, a gift of lively dialogue, and a peculiar detachment. She abounds in humor, but it is always quiet and controlled; and though one feels that she sees through the affectations and petty hypocrisies of her circle, she seldom becomes openly satirical. The fineness of her workmanship, unexcelled in the English novel, makes possible the discrimination of characters who have outwardly little or nothing to distinguish them; and the analysis of the states of mind and feeling of ordinary people is done so faithfully and vividly as to compensate for the lack of passion and adventure. She herself speaks of the “little bit (two inches wide) of ivory on which I work,” and, in contrast with the broad canvases of Fielding or Scott, her stories have the exquisiteness of a fine miniature.
we are always pride and think something in our mind but not right,we assess the others only depend on their background or their color of skin , we hide our true heart and pretend ,we dispise the others without any reason.

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a classical novel in American literature in the 19th century. Since the first Chinese translation of The Scarlet Letter appeared in the 1950s scholars and readers in this country have shown an ever-increasing interest in his works. Its immortal enchantment lies in not only its condemnation of the negative impact of Puritan society on peoples spirit, but also its affirmation of goodness. The novel aims at criticizing severely Puritanical asceticism, suggesting Hawthornes further thinking over the "original sin" "good and evil" "soul salvation" "total depravity" by analyzing the four main characters in the novel. The novel concerns the consequence caused by the sin and peoples attitude towards sin rather than the sin itself. He believes man can do good deeds to get rid of evil in his heart.
The introduction of the author:
Hawthorne was born in 1804, the town of Salem, Massachusetts, a decline of family. His Puritan ancestors had participated in the persecution of heretics was an event. Hawthornes father was a captain, in his death at age 4. 1821, because of Hawthorne relatives is funding into the Institute of Hakata. He graduated from the school in 1825. Back to the Salem Town he works in writing. Hawthornes short stories are mostly drawn from the New England history or real life, focusing on the fate of humanity and human problems. "The Scarlet Letter" was written in 1851.
A reasonable description of marriage by the young woman bound for the
Calvinists are guilty of adultery was prohibited public display, exposed the system was under the rule of colonial politics and religion in some of the darkness. 19th-century novel reveals the era of capitalist development, the United States Code, the law of social cruelty, religious deception and moral hypocrisy.
The story is followed like this:
The protagonist of the novel was a young woman named Hester who was punished to wear the scarlet letter “A” to signify that she was an adulterer. Her husband,Chillingworth, was a scholar much older than her.He sent her to America but he himself failed to arrive. While waiting for her husband,Hester fell in love with a local young minister named Dimmesdale. She had an affair with him and later gave birth to Pearl.Although she was shamed publicly on the town scaffold, she still refused to reveal her lover’s identity. In order to punish her, people forced her to wear the scarlet letter.Since then, she and her daughter Pearl lived in a cottage at the edge of the forest and was alienated by the rest of the community. However, this put her in a special position to observe and think about the society. Her lover, the young minister, lacked courage to confess his sin publicly, felt guilty and tormented himself both mentally and physically. And this gradually ruined his health. At the same time,Chillingworth disguised himself as a doctor and stayed in Dimmesdale’s home. For the sake of revenge,he tried very hard to find out
the connection between the minister’s anguish and Hester’s secret.Later,Hester revealed Chillingworth’s true identity to Dimmesdale and asked him to escape to Europe together. While the plain was destroyed by wicked Chillingworth. In the end,Dimmesdale confessed his adultery with Hester in his last sermon. He tore away his ministerial garments and revealed his breast,on which there was a same mark as the scarlet letter.People were totally shocked and the minister fell onto the scaffold and died. After his death,Chillingworth was left with no object for his revenge,he wasted away and soon died.Later,Hester and Pearl disappeared. This made the story of scarlet letter grow into a legend. Many years later,Hester suddenly returned to the town and resumed her charity work.Until the time of her death, she still wore the scarlet letter on her breast.Whereas,it was no longer the symbol of shame but the symbol of able and angle.
The analysis of the novel:
The Scarlet Letter also has literial and symbolic meanings, and its meaning shifts as time goes by.Originally,it intends to mark Hester as an adulterer,it’s a symbol of shame. But at the end of the story,it becomes a powerful social identity of Hester. She changed the meaning of the scarlet letter in people’s mind through her own effort: accepting the assigned identity and reconfrigurating it with quiet perseverance and inner strength. The main characters of the novel that the author figures
elaborately all have special functions.Hester, the heroine of the novel,is an intelligent,strong-willed and kind-hearted young woman who accepts her sin bravely and finally changes her unfair fate.Dimmesdale,an admirable and respectful minister of the town people, functions mainly as a contrast to Hester. Toward their sin,Hester chooses to accept it and reconfigurate herself. While Dimmesdale doesn’t dare to confess it publicly,it makes him feel guilty and suffer endless physical and spiritual torment, death is the only thing that can relieve him.Through the different fates of Hester and Dimmesdale,we can see the central idea that the author wants to present to us,namely ,the relationship between sin and humanity.Sin stands for the social-defined identity of people, while humanity is our self-defined identity. The way in which the society defines a person is often at odds with the way that individuals define themselves. In fact, sin itself is both guilty act and an act of affaction, its a problematic combination of love and evil. Through the connection and conflict of sin and humanity,we understand the moral strength of human beings. Understanding of the novel:
From the story, we can see that the heroes live a "rather-die-than-live" life, and understand the meaning of living and death in Hawthorne mind that is to living is to suffering and to atone for crimes while to die is to get relief from sins and rebirth in other world. In our society, the term “evil” has been replaced by terms such as
“madness” or “insanity”.People seem to feel the need to understand the minds of perpetrator of evil acts. In a society without a single and solid morality system , we human beings are endowed with exceptional freedom in conscious and behaviour, but we should also take more responsibility for ourselves and the others in the society.

American writer Margaret Mitchell wrote a work merely on the legendary place in the literacy circles of writers, her only work Gone with the Wind has become the United States’ best-selling works of fiction overnight .November 8th, 1900, and Margaret Mitchell was born in Atlanta, home of a lawyer. Since childhood, the Civil War, which happening in Atlanta, has become the topic. Of course Atlanta became the natural background of the novel. Margaret has spent ten years’ time to write the novel and half a year’s time to cross-check fiction historical events involved in the specific time and place.
Gone with the Wind is a novel describes love. Margaret used her female fine and smooth to grasp young women’s complicated psychological activities exactly when they are seeking for love ,modeling this novel’s complex figure Scarlett successfully .Sometimes, this figure was very familiar to us ,but sometimes very strange. Sometimes we could understood her,but sometimes we thought she was unintelligible. However, we could fell she was very authentic from beginning to the end , these were this book’s greatest achievements. Scarlett was young and beautiful but what she had did show her cruel and greedy. In order to re-energize her family property, she took her love and marriage as business. She had three marriages, but she was not sincere at all. Finally, she found that, Ashley, the man she kept in mind constantly was weak and incompetent in
character. But the man named Rhett Butler was worthwhile to be loved. From the view of appreciation of the beauty, the person who had a complicated character could not be in taken into a negative character simply. In previous novels, the author used to shape the character in a simple way. Gone with the Wind has broken this descriptive method. The novel by the characters presented to us is both positive and negative of the combination.
Scarlett, the leading character in the novel, impressed me the most. So I want to talk something about her. Her character was very complex. She was childish and optimistic. She had a tense feeling and her feeling was apt to be revealed. In the meanwhile, she was self-willed and like a bear with a sore head. She was also quite responsible for her own action. She was not good at analyzing and introspection. These characters made her use six or seven years’ experiences to realize that the unwilling love was wrong. This kind of love was just a fine kink but not real exist. From another point of view, I appreciate Scarlett’s brave and strong. When she faced difficulties she would say: Tomorrow is another day. What a reasonable sentence. It’s of great philosophic theory. It told us to be confident to life. When I meet difficulty, I will tell myself: tomorrow is another day.
Gone with the Wind has a very significant position in our society. We feel America is an incredible and strange country, but Gone with the Wind uncovers her too softhearted veil, making people see many things that dirty and glorious are coexisted. It also has a special significance to adolescents. This novel became famous overnight as soon as it published. This novel which reached a length of 1000 pages shocked American. The movie Gone with the Wind was adapted from this novel. The movie made the novel even more famous. It is quite worth reading.
