　　21世纪的水质 Water quality in twenty-first Century【1】

　　Life on earth depends on water,and there is no substitute for it.

　　The current assumption is that our basic needs for water-whether for drinking, agriculture, industry or the raising of fish--will always have to be met.

　　Given that premise, there are two basic routes we can go.

　　more equitable access to water or more drastic engineering solutions.

　　Looking at the engineering solution first, a lot of my research concentrates on what happens to wetlands when you build dams in river basins, particularly in Africa.

　　The ecology of such areas is almost entirely driven by the seasonal change of the river--the pulse of the water.

　　And the fact is that if you build a dam, you generally wreck the downstream ecology.

　　In the past, such problems have been hidden by a lack of information.

　　But in the next century, governments will have no excuse for their blissful ignorance.

　　The engineers ability to control water flows has created new kinds of unpredictability too.

　　'Dams in Africa have meant fewer fish, less grazing and less floodplain agriculture--none of which were anticipated.

　　And their average economic life is assumed to be thirty years.

　　Dams don't exist for ever, but what will replace them is not clear.

　　The key issue in any discussion of water is money.

　　To talk about a water crisis hides intractable problems such as poverty.

　　Consider the problems of water supply in Mexico City or Delhi.

　　If you' re rich, you drink mineral water and may even have a swimming-pool--yet millions in such cities can't get safe drinking water.

　　People talk about the coming water crisis.

　　I believe we have one now.

　　It is a water crisis for the poor.

　　My name is Liming.

　　I am studying at college.

　　A week ago I saw a traffic accident, which is still vivid in my mind.

　　It was at about 9:00 on Saturday morning, June 15th, when I went out of the university to visit a friend of mine at another university.

　　I was walking leisurely on the sidewalk when I heard a loud crash of two vehicles just at the T?junction about 10 metres away.

　　Two taxis crashed together.

　　It was a traffic accident.

　　I went up and found that the two taxis were badly damaged.

　　Both hoofs were out of shape.

　　One door of a car was knocked off and lying on the road.

　　One driver was bleeding and another was shut in the taxi.

　　Some people were trying to help the driver get out of the damaged car.

　　One man was calling the traffic policeman station.

　　A lot of cars were jammed on the road.

　　From the stopping track on the road, it is clear that the two taxis were driving too fast.

　　But it is just one of the reasons.

　　In my opinion, the taxi drivers are eager to take more passengers and make a little more money.

　　On the other hand, both drivers don’t show concern for one another.

　　Both of them wanted to run in front of another.

　　Therefore, the accident is inevitable.

　　So far, we should let the drivers keep it in their mind that a little slower, a little safer.

　　Taking care of others’ lives means taking care of your own life.

　　Many parents who welcome the idea of turning off TV and spending more time with the family are still worded that without TV they would constantly be on call as entertainers for their children.

　　They remember thinking up all sorts of things to do when they were kids.

　　But their own kids seem different,less resourceful, somewhat.

　　When there's nothing to do,these parents observe regretfully, their kids seem unable to come up with anything to do besides turning on TV.

　　One father, for example, says,"When I was a kid, we were always thinking up things to do.

　　We certainly never complain in an annoying way to our parents: 'have nothing to do! ' "He compares this with his own children today:"They're simply lazy.

　　If someone doesn't entertain them, they' II happily sit there watching TV all day.

　　There is one word for this father's disappointment: unfair.

　　He deplores his children' s lack of inventiveness, as if the ability to play were something innate that his children are missing.

　　In fact, while the tendency to play is built into the human species.

　　Such disappointment, however, is not only unjust, it is also destructive.

　　Sensing their parents' disappointment, children come to believe that they are, indeed, lacking something, and that this makes them less worthy of admiration and respect.

　　Giving children the opportunity to develop new re-sources, to enlarge their horizons and discover the pleasures of doing things on their own is, on the other hand, a way to help children develop a confident feeling about themselves as capable and interesting people.
