　　It has been estimated that a thousand years ago there were less than 400 million people on earth. Today， however， the world＇s population has amounted to 5，000 million. What is worse， it keeps growing at a surprising speed. If this trend continues， the world＇s population will shoot up to 7，000 million by the year 20xx. This is what we call population explosion.

　　The rapid development of science and technology is the main cause of population explosion. 　　Double Seventh Festival

　　The Double Seventh Festival， on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month， is a traditional festival full of romance. It often goes into August in the Gregorian calendar.

　　This festival is in mid-summer when the weather is warm and the grass and trees reveal their luxurious greens. At night when the sky is dotted with stars， and people can see the Milky Way spanning from the north to the south. On each bank of it is a bright star， which see each other from afar. They are the Cowherd and Weaver Maid， and about them there is a beautiful love story passed down from generation to generation.

　　Long， long ago， there was an honest and kind-hearted fellow named Niu Lang （Cowhand）。 His parents died when he was a child. Later he was driven out of his home by his sister-in-law. So he lived by himself herding cattle and farming. One day， a fairy from heaven Zhi Nu （Weaver Maid） fell in love with him and came down secretly to earth and married him. The cowhand farmed in the field and the Weaver Maid wove at home. They lived a happy life and gave birth to a boy and a girl. Unfortunately， the God of Heaven soon found out the fact and ordered the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens to bring the Weaver Maid back.

　　With the help of celestial cattle， the Cowhand flew to heaven with his son and daughter. At the time when he was about to catch up with his wife， the Queen Mother took off one of her gold hairpins and made a stroke. One billowy river appeared in front of the Cowhand. The Cowhand and Weaver Maid were separated on the two banks forever and could only feel their tears. Their loyalty to love touched magpies， so tens of thousands of magpies came to build a bridge for the Cowhand and Weaver Maid to meet each other. The Queen Mother was eventually moved and allowed them to meet each year on the 7th of the 7th lunar month. Hence their meeting date has been called "Qi Xi" （Double Seventh）。

　　当我学完第一单元时妈妈就说让我过两天默写课文和单词，当时我都非常紧张，想着想着：怎么这么突然，我都没准备好，有时间光想着玩，到时写不好可怎么办？心里一连串的问题让我浑身起鸡皮疙瘩。

　　剩下两天我还是赶紧抽时间复习吧！

　　时间到了，我像上战场一样脸上的表情冷若冰霜，心里重复地说：加油，加油打到英语大军！开始默写了，我一边在心里默念一遍一边写在本子上，漫长的五分钟过去了妈妈一把抓过我的作业本检查，但是我的心忐忑不安，妈妈检查的非常仔细，恨不得一个小小的标点符号也不放过，检查完了，妈妈“啪“的一声把作业本扔了过来，在妈妈扔过来之前我就感觉完了，没好好背书，有些单词还是没记住，这么多错的，妈妈的这种反应可是正常的，会不会请我吃一顿“竹笋炒肉”，那我屁股要开花了。我心里想：“哦，NO，我被打到了，太惨了，老妈不会放过我的。”

　　The horse is a hooved (ungulate) mammal,a subspecies of the family Equidae.The horse has evolved over the past 45 to 55 million years from a small multi-toed creature into the large,single-toed animal of today.Humans began to domesticate horses around 4000 BC,and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3000 BC.Although most horses today are domesticated,there are still endangered populations of the Przewalski's Horse,the only remaining true wild horse,as well as more common populations of feral horses which live in the wild but are descended from domesticated ancestors.There is an extensive,specialized vocabulary used to describe equine-related concepts,covering everything from anatomy to life stages,size,colors,markings,breeds,locomotion,and behaviour.

　　Horses' anatomy enables them to make use of speed to escape predators and they have a well-developed sense of balance and a strong fight-or-flight instinct.Related to this need to flee from predators in the wild is an unusual trait:horses are able to sleep both standing up and lying down.Female horses,called mares,carry their young for approximately 11 months,and a young horse,called a foal,can stand and run shortly following birth.Most domesticated horses begin training under saddle or in harness between the ages of two and four.They reach full adult development by age five,and have an average lifespan of between 25 and 30 years.

　　Horse breeds are loosely divided into three categories based on general temperament:spirited "hot bloods" with speed and endurance; "cold bloods",such as draft horses and some ponies,suitable for slow,heavy work; and "warmbloods",developed from crosses between hot bloods and cold bloods,often focusing on creating breeds for specific riding purposes,particularly in Europe.There are over 300 breeds of horses in the world today,developed for many different uses.
