　　我上中学时没有学过音标，基本上是跟着教师念，对不对不得而知。有时会闹出笑话，例如dining一room中的第一个i，不发 [i]，而发[ai]，但是教师读成[i]，我们也就跟着读错了，后来才纠正过来。上大学以后改学俄语，大学毕业以后又自学过一些英语，能阅读有关的专业书籍。但是从来没有学过“听”和“说”，基本上是“哑巴英语”。

　　1979年45岁时第一次随团去法国和德国参观。当时我能阅读自己熟悉的专业书刊，算是代表团中英语水平比较高的。但一到外国，除了一般的问候语以外几乎都听不懂，说不了，所以根本听不懂技术讲解。对于熟悉的'专业书面材料，如果是用大写字母写成的说明，一时还反应不过来，需要在脑子中翻译成小写才看得懂。代表团团长还不时地鼓励我“胆子大一些”。其实哪里是什么胆子大小的问题，听不懂，说不了，看不懂，哪里来的胆子？

　　在国外期间，我与每一个不会外语的人一样，口袋里装着一个纸条，上写“我住在XXX旅馆，请把我送回去。”以防一旦走失时使用。我当时是某设计院总工程师，高级工程师，看着这样的纸条，心里真有一种说不出的被侮辱感，“我这个中国高级工程师和总工程师只有这样的水平，与文盲差不多，外国人怎么会看得起我们？” 发愤之心油然而生，回国以后下决心发奋学习，努力提高英语口语能力。
