　　Dear Professor Smith, I'm Li Ming, chairman of the Student Union.

　　It's a great pleasure to invite you to be the judge for this year's English Drama Contest.

　　As the main organizer of this competition, we have been busy preparing for two months.

　　To our delight, everything has gone smoothly and it is just around the corner.

　　According to the schedule, there will be two rounds.

　　Twenty groups from different departments will compete in the preliminary contest which will be held on the next Saturday night, 7: 00 p. m., in the Student Club.

　　Ten groups will be chosen to take part in the final one week later, at the same time and place as the first round.

　　Huamei School is a international school. So today I want to talk about some differences between east and west. What are the major differences between Chinese and western ？I wonder how many things do we know about the difference between west and east? Although I can’t tell you exactly , I want to talk about it in the following three parts. They are food, dressing and living styles.

　　First, food. In China, we prefer noodles, rice , as the main course. We like cooking a lot of delicious dishes, We sit together, and taste the dishes together, , when we eating ,we like chatting and laughing, But in England or other west countries, people like eating hamburgers, chips, pizza, pasta as their main course, they eat them with vegetable salad.

　　Second, dressing. In China, we prefer colorful clothes, we dress them in different place, but we don’t make up; But in west countries, people dress according their visiting places, in daily times, they often wear casual clothes, but if they go to a formal places , they often wear suits, ladies wearing beautiful dresses, pretty hats. No matter how old the ladies are, they always make up.

　　Third, living styles. Chinese prefer getting up early and go to bed early too. Children often go to different spare schools to study. They seldom go to work during the weekend.

　　That’s the differences I know. I And I believe that “East or west , home is best”.

　　When I first went to university,I was very nervous because I didn't know any one there.Sam,my classmate, soon changed all that.He was the first one to talk to me on my first day in school and I was grateful for his friendliness.

　　We soon became good friends after we discovered that we had a lot in common.For example,we both like literature.He soon became the editor of the school magazine while I am a regular contributor to the articles there.

　　Moreover,Sam is extremely helpful.Whenever I need something or just someone to talk to,Sam is always there.He lends me money without so much as mentioning when I am supposed to return it(but of course I always return the money).Besides,he is a great listener.I feel as if I could pour out my whole heart to him.While offering a sympathetic ear,he also makes constructive suggestions.

　　I have always been a voracious reader, but the pity is that I used to be indiscriminate in my reading habit. I would read and book which I could lay my hand on or any book the binding or the blurb of which caught my fancy at the moment. But when I grew up I found that books have to be useful or they would be much more harmful that a bad habit, and also that life is too short for us to waste it reading inferior or useless books. To read choice books can save time and we would thus be able to read more of them. The question of choosing good and suitable books, however, was once my greatest coming and it came in the form of a book, the Chinese translation of a book by the famous English writer W.S Maugham in which he introduces his readers to the best of world literature. I got the book by chance. I took part in a simulated entrance examination and won the ninth prize, the book I have just mentioned. I was delighted that Maugham, shows not only the content of each of the major works in his mind but also the way to read it. Thanks to this book I have come to know what is really meant by the literary spirit and what are the ingredients of great books. I would call it the most influential book in my life and would like to recommend it to all those lovers of literature.
