  不要盲目地提前开始开设英语课程

  在许多人看来,英语学习似乎越早越好,他们的理论依据就是所谓的“语言学习的关键期”假说。

  1967年,Lenneberg通过对儿童语言障碍的研究提出在语言学习的过程当中存在着一段时间(大约10岁前),在该段时间内,语言的习得最为容易,而超

  过这段时间,语言的习得能力就会受到限制。在此之后几十年的时间里,人们针对这一假说进行了大量的研究,支持者与反对者都不乏其人,时至今日也尚无定论。因此,“语言学习的关键期”理论仍然还是一个未经验证的假设,而且,这一关键期主要是指母语的习得而言,用在外语学习上未必合适。

  许多人认为儿童要比青少年或成年人具有更多的学习外语的优势。早在10年前,我国著名的英语教育专家桂诗春教授就明确指出这种看法是不能成立的。儿童具有模仿力强、听觉敏锐、心理障碍较少的特点,这是青少年和成人所不能比的,但是不能因此而过分地夸大儿童在外语学习方面的优势。与儿童相比,青少年的智力较发达、记忆力较强,而成年人具有较强的学习动机和学习持久性、较高的语言规则归纳能力,这都是外语学习所必需,也是儿童所不及的。大量的研究表明,除了语音之外,儿童在外语学习方面与青少年和成人相比,并无任何优势可言。

  有的学校提前开设英语是因为不得已而为之。原因在于许多家长给孩子选择学校的条件之一就是看这所学校是否从一年级就开设英语。这与媒体上面一些不适当的宣传有很大的关系。对于望子成龙的家长来说这是可以理解的,但是作为一名教育工作者,我们应该从儿童的长远发展考虑,要遵循教育规律,应保持清醒的头脑,不能人云亦云,陷入盲目性。《英语课程标准(实验稿)》在对国内外外语教学现状的充分考察、对少年儿童心理特点和外语学习规律认真研究的基础上确定从三年级开始设英语课,不是随便规定的。我们可以在很小的范围内进行一些提前开设英语课的实验,但是绝不能不顾外语教学的规律,盲目地一哄而上。

  不能降低小学英语师资的标准

  小学英语处在英语学习的初级阶段,一旦学生学习失败,将会影响到学生今后一生的英语学习。因此,合格的师资对于小学英语教学尤为重要。从目前的实际情况来看,我国小学英语师资还存在很大的缺口。

  令人担心的是,为了弥补小学英语师资的不足,某些地方的教育主管部门会从目前正在从事其他课程教学的教师中抽出一部分教师来改行教英语。这些教师的绝大多数都不具备小学英语师资的基本条件,如果不经过必要的培训就匆忙上阵,教学效果令人担忧。因此,我们主张在小学英语师资的配备上应该遵循宁缺勿滥的原则,在师资培训方面多下功夫,切实保证小学英语师资的质量,从而从根本上保证小学英语教学的质量。

  重视英语教学,但不要忽视汉语和中国文化教育

  中国人从来没有像今天这样重视英语的学习,这无疑是一件好事情,但是这样的环境很容易给人,尤其是小学生(包括许多家长在内),造成一种错觉,认为英语比汉语还重要,从而忽视汉语的学习。小学生的汉语水平也处在一个发展的`过程之中,如何处理好英语与汉语之间的关系是小学英语教学需要认真考虑的问题。

  在学生学习英语的过程当中势必要接触英语国家的文化。但是,我们在重视外国文化的同时,却很容易忽视中国文化。在我国目前广泛使用的各种英语教材中,与中国文化相关的课文内容微乎其微。由此而产生的后果是显而易见的,对于中国的英语学习者来说,英语学习的重要目的之一是使用英语传播中华民族的优秀文化,而许多的英语学习者在通过了四级、六级考试甚至英语专业毕业之后,都不知道“孔子”在英语中应该怎么说,《红楼梦》、《水浒传》、《三国演义》、《聊斋志异》等中国古典文学名著在英语中该怎样翻译。小学生的价值观与道德观都处在形成的过程之中,他们思想活跃,易于接受新鲜事物,但是又缺乏一定的鉴别能力,在学习异国文化的过程当中,如果不善加引导,他们很容易盲目地接受西方文化中的价值观、道德观和行为规范,很容易忘记甚至疏远自己民族的文化传统。

  已故著名英语教育家许国璋教授曾指出“小学生专注外语,通盘的文化基础自然削弱。”在目前的情况下,这一担心仍然值得我们关注。我国许多老一辈的专家学者的成功除了得益于较高的外语水平之外,更主要的是在于他们对于中国文化的深刻把握与理解,像钱钟书、季羡林、许国璋等等,莫不如此。

  不要过分强调跳跳唱唱的作用

  小学英语教学要充分考虑儿童的心理特点,培养学生学习英语的兴趣,使学生能够在轻松活泼的气氛中学到英语。因此,小学英语教师创造了丰富多彩、形式多样的教学活动,例如唱英语歌曲、学英语儿歌、跳舞等,这些都起到了很好的教学效果。

  但是,英语教学的目的在于提高学生综合运用英语的能力,跳跳唱唱只是手段,而不是目的。不能在英语教学中为了唱歌而学唱歌,为了表演而学表演。我们已经注意到,在一些小学英语教学中,一些教师过分的强调了跳跳唱唱的作用,把唱歌跳舞当成了主要的英语教学活动,学生在课堂上学的是英语歌曲,课后的作业也是歌曲。这样不符合儿童的心理特点,也不符合英语学习的规律。因此,一名好的英语教师应该从学生的实际情况和提高学生综合运用英语能力的目标出发,而不是千篇一律地照搬照抄。英语教学应该注意实效,不要过多地搞一些形式化的东西。

  英语学习是一个漫长的过程,其中需要学习者付出艰辛的努力。在小学英语教学中,在确保教学生动有趣的同时,还应注意对学生正确的学习态度以及学习毅力的培养,要把生动有趣的教学活动与一些机械的记忆以及听、说、读、写训练有机地结合起来。我们既要防止不顾儿童的心理特点,机械地套用成人的英语教学方法,只注重教师的讲解,而不注意学生的积极参与,使学生失去学习英语的兴趣;又要防止过分强调学生兴趣的培养,不注意对学生进行学习意志与毅力的锻炼与培养,使英语教学流于形式,从而导致“英语课堂热热闹闹,学生英语水平提高了了”的状况。

  Yesterday afternoon, my teacher led ten students to a poor primary school in the suburbs. I was one of them. We got there at 3 o'clock and they were in class. So we went to the office first. We took some books, stationery and gadgets for students. We gave them to the school principal directly. I was a little surprised by the environment. There's no gate, no playground and only one building with eight rooms, six of them for classrooms and one for office, the another one for cooking, because some students eat their lunch at school. After a short chat in the office, we went to the classrooms and attended to class. They were all concentrated but the students of Grade One were a little naughty. They moved in chairs often and sometimes talked with neighbors. After class, students gathered on the front of the building and they were pided into five groups that each of them contained two of my classmates. We told stories, sang songs and played small games. All of my classmates were impressed by this visit and we hoped that we could go there again.
