The Tallest Grass--Bamboo
Although bamboo is really a kind of grass, it looks more like tree -- a beautiful tree. It has long leaves that sway in the wind like slim fingers reaching to touch something. Chinese and Japanese poets write poems and songs about bamboo, the artists paint it in pictures.
Not all bamboo grows tall.Altogether there are more than 500 different kinds of bamboo, and some grow no higher them your ankles. Bamboo grows best in places where it is warm and where it rains often. Some kinds of bamboo grow very fast. If they are growing near a house, their slim leaves brush the roof gently and cool the house with their shade.
Some bloom and have seeds every year. Some never bloom at all. Some bloom only once, after living about 40 years, and then die. However, new shoots of bamboo will come up from around the roots of the old ones.
But the most interesting about this remarkable plant is what people do with it after it is cut down. As bamboo is hollow, it can be fitted together and used for pipes to carry water. At the same time it is so strong that people use it to build houses, and even high bridges over rivers. Bamboo is used for more then building.People can eat it.The tender young shoots of hamboo are crisp and tasty. They are often found in Chinese or Japanese dishes. Bamboo can also be made into a fine paper, good walking sticks and fishing poles.
Bamboo probably has more uses than any other plant in the world.

skiing is a desirable activity fro young people. it provides the ecitement that the youth is commonly seeking. the skiers can enjoy the thrill of gliding at tremendous speed down a gleaming, white mountain slope. often, with split second tinting, they must dodge trees, stumps, and rocks——or find themselves suddenly sprawling in the snow. if they have more than average skill, they can sall through the air in breathtaking leaps and jumps that bring ecitement to the onlookers as well.
true, there is danger in this ecitement, but that is a risk the youth enjoys. furthermore, skiing is healthful. it provides eercise, often very strenuous as the skiers trudge up a mountain path or work their way on skis up a slope of deep snow. the best of skiers know that they need strong muscles to successfully control their skis, so they eercise to keep themselves physically fit. another desirable feature is the companionship that usually develops wherever skiers gather.
friendships grow quickly on the slopes and in the usual nearby shelter where the skiers find food, warmth, and rest. their eperiences of the day and their youthfulness easily draw these people together in happy fellowship.

(Common as it is, the above picture has deep implication). As is vividly shown in the cartoon, at least five patients are staying in one hospital who are injured because of jay-walking, driving after drinking and disregarding of the laws. If we take a closer watch, it is of little difficulty to find that one police is patiently explicating the traffic laws to one injured person, sitting at a wheel chair which is pushed by one nurse.
There is no doubt that it describes a common phenomenon in our society that traffic problems are increasingly severe. What might trigger this affair(For my part, the following two are of utmost importance.) For one part, the general public have failed to realize the importance of abiding by the traffic regulations and laws(and a big deal of the attention have been distracted by the so-called“great affair”). Once some drivers easily disregard the traffic signals, so do other drivers who intend to obey the laws. Moreover, the current state of affairs depicted in the drawing, may have been encouraged, though not justified, by the lack of severe legal penalty. If someone does disorderly parking or drive under the influence of alcohol, the punishment is not so harsh that the drivers could afford to learn a heavy lesson from the fine. (If we let this situation continue as it is, ultimately, our society will suffer a great destruction.)
It is advisable for us to take steps to reverse this current evil trend. On one hand, we should cultivate the awareness of people that everyone needs to reflect on his or her uncivilized conducts and strengthen his self-discipline. On the other hand, it is high time that more severe and sound laws and regulations should be introduced to harness and curb this matter. Only in this way, can we crack the hard nut and embrace a bright future.
Many high school graduates wrongly assume that university life is totally free from worries. After a period of serious and solemn study in senior three, the hard beavers expect to take a break and develop some habits. However, many may find later that the situation may be beyond their anticipation.
I've tried to convince the adults around that the image they have of my university life as a free and unrestrained one is some what misunderstanding. In reality, school life is so busy that I sometimes wonder if my energy is enough.
About my first year in college, my life is mainly made up of two parts, study and practice. As a student, the main task is study. In order to gain a high GPA, I have to get used to the college life style and begin a new pursue in study. It is the learning method that shows off most of the differences between senior study and college study. ! have a roommate who goes out to have lessons in the morning and comes back in the evening after the self-study classroom is closed. The peers' behaviors make me feel under pressure. In university, one% view of life is integrally formed and strengthened. I begin to program my future plan and realize that study itself is an affair for me. The more courses I learn by heart, the more maturity I get. University education ensures students of better jobs. I usually reckon that time consuming on study is worthwhile as it bears such important events as occupation, career and responsibility.
To some extent, study and practice are intertwined, and they begin from the very start of freshman year. Student Union enjoys almost complete acceptance. It is a place where one can get his ability trained, have his competence applied and make a lot of friends who share the same interests with him. But sometimes, social activities and practices are time consuming, what's more, the sense of responsibility also requires you to make effort to fulfill the task.
No one starts in one's present position all along that it was what he or she wants to do. Sometimes, the chance will just lead you down some unforeseen trail only if you have a prepared mind. My first year in college is not relaxed, but all way along is full of curiosity and satisfaction.

a man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps: for there is a companionship of books as well as of men; and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.
a good book may be among the best of friends. it is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. it is the most patient and cheerful of companions. it does not turn its back upon us in times of trouble or distress. it always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us
in youth, and comforting us in age.
books possess an extract having the fundamental properties of immortality. they are by far the most lasting products of human effort. temples and statues decay, but books survive. time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author's
minds ages ago. the only effect of time has been to sift out the bad products, for nothing in literature can long survive but what is really good.
books introduce us into the best society: they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. we hear what they said and did. we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, hurt with them; their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were, in a measure, actors with them in the scenes which they describe.
the great and good do not die even in this world. embalmed in books, their spirits walk abroad. the book is a living voice. it is an intellect to which one still listens. hence we ever remain under the influence of the great men of old. the great intellects of the world are as much alive now as they were ages ago.
We are often told not to judge people by their appearance, because for a person, abilities are far more important than appearance. Throughout history, there are numerous examples of outstanding people with remarkable achievements who are just plain or not good-looking at all.
However, nowadays some people hold the belief that appearance outweighs abilities, partly because some beautiful people seem to have advantages in competitive situations like job interviews and have been given more opportunities than others.
Nevertheless, I still firmly believe that abilities are more important For one thing, although good looks are easy on the eye, it is always one's abilities that create values that really matter. For another, while people's good looks were born to them, abilities have to be gained through deliberate self-cultivation and years of hardworking which speak more of people's true colors. Last but not least, abilities grow over time while good looks only fade.
Eventually, it is the abilities that help people succeed, so it is safe to say that abilities will always bring more to life than good looks.
