When young F. W. Woolworth was a store clerk, he tried to convince his boss to have a ten-cent sale to reduce inventory. The boss agreed, and the idea was a resounding success. First of all, the whole experiences of university life including all the academic lectures and social practices forge our personality and cultivate such virtues as cooperativeness and openness. Our old home was located on a grassy plain and not far from it were wide farms and a big orchard. There was a dirt road running past our house and winding up a hill; along the road you could find a serpentine creek alive with fish and prawn as well as a big pond often cluttered with blooming lotuses. The grassy plain, wide farms, dirt road, crooked creek and the pond are the things I can hardly forget and also the things that often put me in mind of my days first as a child and then as an adolescent. But, alas, no traces are now left of the scene of my past. Our old house has given way to a high apartment building; the dirt road is now replaced by a smooth highway; the wide farms and that big orchard have long been converted into factory grounds. Though I have lived in that apartment building for a long time, I am not acquainted with my fellow occupants, not knowing who they are and what they are. I dislike this impersonal human relationship and also the surroundings of my present dwelling place. The old creek is still there but so heavily polluted by a near-by factory that neither fish nor humans can find its water drinkable. There is also no fresh air, no fragrance of the soil. I deplore the side-effects of a material civilization. If we do no try to solve the problems that plague our neighborhood, the quality our life will simply turn from bad to worse.

To sum up, our customs have value and are an important part of our culture. Therefore, I dont believe that we should abandon our traditional customs when we move to another country. At the same time, I believe that we should learn about the customs of our new home and follow those that appeal to us. In this way, we can remember and celebrate our old culture while adapting to our new one.

Another round of energy crisis is knocking at the door. in 20xx world oil consumption reached a new record causing oil price in the international market to skyrocket amazingly. as for china it was reported that many traditional mineral cities in northeastern china had run into predicament with their economy collapsed and workers unemployed only because coal had been mined out. fossil energy resources including coal oil and gas are unlike sunlight water power and wind power which are generated consistently. they’re not practically reproductive during human history. once consumed they’re gone forever.
If they were to be exhausted before we could find sufficient reproductive resources to replace them with we’d have to live in entire blackout again like our ancestors have done thousands of years ago. that’s of course not what anyone would want to see.
Due to technical limitations people still have to utilize these resources now. as a result we must economize them most cleverly. new techniques should be developed and applied to reduce energy cost in industry and daily life. alternative energy should be employed wherever possible. eradicate any practice that wastes energy.
Humans have overcome so many crises in history and we’re sure to win this time also.
