Folks, no matter your English speaking level, starting a conversation with a foreigner can be tricky. This is especially true when trying to talk to strangers. But, in my experience living overseas, chatting with strangers is half the fun of living abroad. Testing my language skills on unsuspecting bystanders is a great way to pass the time, improve my language, and, in some cases, make a friend! If you feel the same way, read on to learn three surefire methods to successfully start chatting with anyone you want.

  Comment -

Starting a good conversation is always related to the context of the situation. No matter where or when, just look around your environment for something to have an opinion on. Then throw a little body language towards your target and let them know that very same opinion. The most classic is anything related to the weather. Something like, “Beautiful day today; much better than last weekend!” Raining? Comment on appropriate clothing: “I probably should have worn more today.”

Indoors is no exception, you can still comment on whatever is in your immediate area. Wanna chat up that mysterious foreigner roaming your office? Smile and mention how much better the remodeled tea room is. Maybe even offer to make a cup!

  Key Examples

  Outdoors - 户外

  Beautiful day today!

Wow, can you believe this rain?

  Indoors - 室内

I can't believe this desk light is still broken.

I love the new posters. They are so much better than before.

  Ask for help -

Sometimes the simplest way to get the ball rolling is by asking for help. Here, the sincerity of the help you need is not the point. Maybe you are 90% sure that you should jump on bus #22 but... why not make 100% sure with the help of the interesting looking stranger sharing your bench. Confirming something with the person next to you is always going to get you a response, and an opening to having a more extensive conversation. This is easily achieved with a simple, “Do you know...”

When appropriate, you can even bust out a “Can you help me...?” or “Would you mind helping me...?” Below are some more examples.

  Key Examples

  At a party/bar -

Do you know anything about this DJ?

Would you mind holding this drink real quick?

  At a conference - 会议

Do you know when Prof. Smith is speaking?

Hi. Can you help me with these papers?

  Compliment - 赞美

Nobody is gonna get upset if you kick things off with a little sugar assuming you keep it reasonable. Short and simple is usually best. For example, “I really like your shoes!” or perhaps, “Nice watch! What brand is that?”

Don’t limit the compliments to fashion. It could be the speech they just gave: “What you just said was perfect.” Or a skill they perform well, “You really know what you’re doing.” In short, when someone impresses you, let them know.

  Key Examples

  Style -

  That's a badass shirt!

  Nice shoes...

  Performance - 表演

  Hey, great job!

  That was pretty awesome!

  Conclusion - 总结

All of these starters are just that: starters. Once you initiate a conversation its going to be up to the two of you to expand on it. Once the chatting has begun, relax and look for opportunities to showcase your personality. Ask more questions and drop in some humor, sarcasm, or any other wit that fits. These organic conversations will continue to improve as you talk with more people. Keep it real. You don’t have to be trying to make a new best friend everytime, but if you practice enough, you might in spite of yourself!

  Warnings - 雷区

“Where are you from?” and “What’s your name?” are overused and already super weak first-questions, but if delivered by an English speaking novice with the wrong tone, these poor openings quickly become complete turn-offs. The above three approaches are all superior anyways, so there’s really no reason to risk coming off sounding like an interrogator. You can learn each others names and hometowns as things naturally progress.

With that said, enjoy starting more English conversations with more people and less pressure. Whenever it feels right to wrap up the conversation, go ahead and offer them a warm wish like, “Have a great day!”
