小河马低下头又想哭了。正在这时，一个骆驼运输队驮着大包走过。小河马想，我的腿和胳膊都很粗壮，去参加骆驼队吧!于是他跟着骆驼运输队走进了沙漠。可是小河马不习惯在沙漠里走路，没走多远，他就累得趴下了。小河马趴在地上，心里真难过呀!
从沙漠回来后，小河马看见了青蛙厨师。青蛙瞧着小河马不高兴的'样子，就说：“瞧你肚子圆圆的，跟我一样，就学做菜吧。”小河马开开心心地系上了围裙，跟着青蛙厨师去做菜。可是，小河马的手太粗了，怎么也不能把菜切得很细。
小河马没精打彩地回到河边，一个人坐在河边生闷气。他自言自语地说：“唉，我真没用处!”正在这时，一只小松鼠来了。小松鼠要过河，可是河上没有桥。怎么办呢?小松鼠看见了小河马，说：“河马大哥，你力气很大，又会游泳，请你帮我过河吧。”小河马乐意极了，他驮着小松鼠过了河。这下子，他终于发现了一点：原来谁都有一定的用处。于是他在河边设了服务站，挂了一块牌子，上面写着“免费渡河”。小河马找到了自己的用处!
